Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has said the side have gradually achieved 98% qualification to the upcoming 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia.

The Eagles were forced to a 1-1 draw by the African champions, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, on Monday in Yaoundé in the group’s reverse fixture clash of the World Cup qualifying race.

The three-time African champions whitewashed the Cameroonians with four unreplied goals on Friday in Uyo.

Akpeyi said that the Eagles’ overall performance in the double-header against Cameroon has given the nation the edge to qualify automatically from the group to the showpiece event.

“Eagles 1-1 draw in Yaoundé against Cameroon is a good performance, we were able to score before the Cameroonians levelled scores to end the match on even scores.

“Right now we are 98% on the road to the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia.

“The overall performance has given us the edge above the other group’s members to earning the sole ticket.

“At least we can relax a bit and play the remaining two qualifying matches on the calendar with less pressure.

“Of course, we will work hard to obtain positive result against Zambia right here on our backyard to cement the ticket.

“What Nigerians owe to the team is to keep encouraging them in every aspect possible to help the side to continue to excel.

“I was scheduled to partake in the clash but for the injury that ruled me out and Ikechukwu Ezenwa stepped up to give good account of himself in the matches.

“That’s the type of encouragement we need from Nigerians at all times so that whoever gets the nod to take charge will perform creditably,” said the Chippa United shot stopper to supersport.com.

The Super Eagles are at the summit of group B on 10 points, six behind closest rivals Zambia while Cameroon and Algeria are third and fourth with three and one point respectively. The winners of each group are guaranteed automatic qualification to the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia.
