Delta Queens striker Rosemary Okezie has said her side played for their head coach, Clifford Chukwuma, in the emphatic victory against title holders Rivers Angels.

The Okowa Girls defeated the Jewel of Rivers 2-0 in Monday’s Nigeria Women's Premier League (NWPL) Super 4 matchday 1 clash at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo state.

The former Rivers Angels goal merchant scored the opening goal while Adebisi Saheed grabbed the match winner to hand her side the whole three points at stake.

Okezie said her side are determined to maintain a 100 per cent performance throughout the prime football fiesta.

“The head coach of Rivers Angels, Edwin Okon, boasted to our coach, Clifford Chukwuma, that his side will always beat us any day any time so we rose to the occasion to prove him wrong.

“The boast served as a challenge to us and it brought out the best in us and I’m happy we made our coach happy with the 2-0 win against Rivers Angels.

“Rivers Angels are my former side and I always score against them each time both of us met on the field of play.

“I’m happy that I did not disappoint but still scored one of the goals as I used to do in the past.

“I can only ask Rivers Angels to raise their game if they want to make anything out of the Super 4 as we did not see much challenge coming from them.

“Of course, we had a thorough preparation coming into the NWPL Super 4 competition so we saw the opening match victory coming against Rivers Angels.

“We are determined to keep the flawless performance and win all our matches irrespective of who the opposition are.

“Our mission in the NWPL Super 4 is to make the state proud by lifting the coveted trophy,” said Okezie to supersport.com.

The hard fought win by the Asaba Landladies take them to the summit of the four-team NWPL Super 4 log on three points, same as second-placed side Nasarawa Amazons but on superior goals, while Bayelsa Queens and Cup holders Rivers Angels are without any points after their matchday 1 clashes.

Delta Queens will face neighbours Bayelsa Queens in the second match of matchday 2 while Rivers Angels will confront Nasarawa Amazons in the first match of the day.
