Rivers United beat Rayon Sports 2-0 on Sunday to move one step closer towards the group stage of the Caf Confederation Cup.
Goals either side of half time from Emeka Atuloma and Guy Kuemian put the Nigerian side in the box seat ahead of the second leg in Kigali in a week’s time.
The visitors enjoyed excellent opportunities to take the lead but it was United that took the lead against the run of play just before the half hour when Atuloma swept home a cross with an emphatic volley.

Six minutes after the restart, Ivorian striker Kuemian secured the win for his side with a brilliant goal that left the Rayon Sports defence stunned.
Stanley Eguma, technical manager of Rivers United, expressed satisfaction with the win but stated that his side will not be lulled into a false sense of security.
“This is not the time to celebrate as we still have to see out the second leg,” he said.

“It was a highly tactical game and I am pleased with our win in the end,” he told supersport.com.
Rayon’s head coach, Masudi Djuma, also took the time to discuss the result and look ahead to the second leg.
“There is still the second leg to play and we could either win 1-0, win 5-0 or lose; we will see,” he said.
Nothing has been decided yet as the two sides meet again on April 22 at the imposing 30 000 capacity Amahoro Stadium in Kigali for the return fixture.
The prize for the victors, over two legs, is a place in the group stage of the competition.
